André BELO (1908-1976)

This French sculptor, born in Paris in 1908, a student of Jean Boucher and Maillol, developed an interest in sculpture at a very young age and embarked on his vocation early on. He will have an activity of professor at the School of Applied Arts and Member of the jury of the School of Fine Arts. He produced models of medals for Erik Satie and Charles Dullin at the Hôtel de la Monnaie, bas-reliefs but also more artistic compositions, which he presented at the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture from 1945 until the beginning of the 1970s.

He is noted for his modern lines, bordering on figuration, surrealism and abstraction. He achieves a great stripping of forms, inspired by both Laurens and Brancusi. The representation of the human, around themes such as women, couples, motherhood, remains his favorite theme. But he also sculpted some animals, such as his "Firebird", a bronze proof of which is kept at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris.
