MATISSE Henri (1869-1954)

Matisse, leader of the fauvism movement, started sculpture to “ have a rest from painting where I had done all I could for the time being”. His sculptures will be inspired by Degas , Rodin and Bourdelle. “le serf” , his first significative sculpture will be followed by “Madeleine”  a simplified armless woman body. After conceiving some childrend heads and african inspired primitive works, he will take a break from sculpture before starting again in 1930. Staying close to his paintings, his last work features sitting or laying nudes. In 1932, he will stop sculpting, spending his last days as the most important painter of the XXth century.
